One of them is that the Q5's navigation system doesn't include AI-powered obstacle avoidance which means it's susceptible to getting hung up on shoes and socks, and is unable to navigate tight spaces very well in our tests. Also, it doesn't have a camera that would let it see the corners of an area.

It's still a great option, especially if you want to save money on an iRobot Roomba and you have a mostly bare-floor home or office. Additionally, it's quiet and can work while you're at work, or going to school. The only thing it doesn't have that you can't find in the more expensive iRobot Roomba X30 is edge-to-edge vacuuming on floors that aren't clean. It's also less effective when it comes to mopping. It is dependent on disposable wet wipes that don't adhere very well and cannot handle dried-on debris. The Q5 does come with self-emptying docks, however. If you're in need of it clean the mopping pad, it can be replaced with one that is wet in just a few just a few seconds.

2. iRobot Roomba X30

The iRobot Roomba X30 packs impressive vacuuming and mopping capabilities into a compact, sleek package. Its nimble navigation and intelligent cleaning maps make it simple to clean and efficient in dealing with larger particles such as pet hair. It also has self-emptying dustbins as well as powerful suction, and support for virtual boundaries. It's the best robot vacuum for carpets, but it's not as effective as some rivals in deep cleaning.

It's a little more expensive than iRobot Combo v9+ or iRobot Roomba j9+ but has superior suction and an onboard bin that automatically empty into the base. It also supports voice commands using Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. It is able to clean floors even after it vacuums. This is a feature we haven't seen on other robotic hoovers vacuum/mop combinations.

3. iRobot Roomba X40

With an elegant circular design that looks more like a regular Roomba than the competition's compact models this mop and robot vacuum is one of the most appealing looking in our tests. The latest flagship model from iRobot is also among its most advanced. It comes with advanced features such as Enhanced Dirt Detection as well as future compatibility (another company's robot that can wash mop pads autonomously).

It's also the only robotic hoovers vacuum/mop to score a perfect 10 out of 10 in our evaluations. This is due to a combination high-tech sensors including a structured light system, a camera and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra was the only robot we tested that could fill and empty its basestation on its own. It also boasted a suction of 12,000Pa and self-cleaning mops.

The X40 as with other iRobot products, is easy to operate. It comes with a simple mobile application interface and is compatible with Amazon Alexa and Apple HomeKit. The only issue is that it's loud that could be a problem if you run it in the morning before work or at night as you try to sleep.

It's also a bit expensive, but it's not as expensive as Ecovacs X2 Omni or the Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra, both of which are equally powerful and more attractive. It's a dual-purpose vacuum that's very capable however, it will cost you more and create more noise.

iRobot L20 Ultra

The L20 Ultra is a top-of-the-range robot vacuum and mop with a variety of sophisticated features that let you get rid of your chores. The L20 Ultra is a hands-free cleaning device, similar to Ecovacs top-of-the-line X2 Omni or Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra. It comes with a multi-function dock that will automatically empty the vacuum's bin and refills the water tank, and washes and dries mop pads.

The smart robot utilizes LIDAR and structured lighting to map out floor plans and spot obstacles. It navigates more intelligently than its competitors with premium features. It also has a front mounted camera for real-time hazards detection but this wasn't completely foolproof in our tests, and was often confused with power cords or obstructions.

The vacuum has a suction maximum of 7,000 Pascals, which is more than enough to complete the task. It also comes with "Intelligent Dirt Detection", that regulates the amount of time the vac works and alters the frequency of cleaning for various areas of the house in accordance with how dirty they are.

For larger homes it's worth looking for a model that has zone or spot cleaning modes that allow you to tell the robot to clean one specific area of your home using the app or voice controls. A stair mode can be useful if you have a number of furniture. For busy families, a recharge feature and resume feature that permits your robot automatic vacuum cleaner to continue from where it left off can be extremely useful.

5. iRobot Roomba RX3

The RX3 is more intelligent than the price suggests. It is a great job vacuuming, picking up 55% of the debris we found in our tests (it was second only to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mopses with one pad, which uses a reciprocating motion that cleans better than most of the other robot mop cleaners we've tested. It's also extremely self-sufficient, with a full-featured app and a self-emptying base that can be washed.

The well-designed iRobot application guides you through an initial mapping exercise that collects information about your floorplan and any "no-go" areas you have marked on the map. It can be used to design cleaning schedules, or to set up the spot-cleaning. You can also use it to prioritize the most soiled areas for better performance. The app has a range of options, including seasonal suggestions, custom mapping and advanced cleaning settings.

It is also able to reach corners and under furniture more easily because its shape is more rectangular. It features a powerful 8,000 Pascal suction as well as intelligent combs to remove pet hair. It also has the ability to set up a spot cleaning that thoroughly cleans a particular area.

The Miele Scout RX3 Home Vision HD offers a sleeker and less expensive alternative to iRobot Roomba. It's more appealing, Dolce & Gabbana-esque design and its twin cameras resemble cute eyes. It is capable of vacuuming, but it is more susceptible to get caught on low thresholds and is more noisy than the other top robot vacuums we've examined. It also comes with an app that's less intuitive and has a tiny base station that doesn't double as a bin to empty.
