Upgrades can boost the value of weapons, armors and rings. They also boost extra bonuses, such as damage from PvE and crit chance.

If the template for upgrading a weapon is %, it will increase 3percent of its previous damage for every time it's upgraded.

The cost of upgrading an item is determined by the item's level. The cost increases as the item level increases.

Components

Upgrade components can be added to weapons, armor and trinkets to give them a stat boost or an extra effect. They can be obtained by crafting, purchasing from vendors, trading or looting. Some upgrades can also be accompanied by specific cosmetic effects.

Upgrade components can be inserted into any equipment that has a slot to accommodate them. The item must be at the very least upgraded to blue level in order for the component to be used. Upgrade components, unlike other mods, can only be applied once. They cannot be replaced or applied multiple times. Infusions and enrichments are a kind of upgrade component that is used to upgrade non-amulet legendary and Ascended equipment, as well in some items that aren't ascended. Infusions and Enrichments can be obtained by salvaging equipment that is ascended or completing a mission in the Prophecies, Factions, and Nightfall campaigns.

A prefix or suffix can be added to an upgrade, which alters the name of the item it is used on (for instance, 'Canthan Armor Insignia,' becomes Canthan Armor Minor Vigor). Some upgrades boost the Mark Level or Rarity, allowing players to create stronger versions of that equipment using fewer Upgrade Crystals than is required to reach the same level of upgrade using normal methods.

A boost upgrade can modify the attack or defense properties of a weapon, or armor. After the player has completed the cutscene and defeated the Crazed Mechanist, these upgrades can be crafted at the Portative Forging Station. These upgrades are available for purchase them from the cash shop, or by obtaining them from enemies when upgrading other gear.

Each upgrade increases the likelihood that a higher tier version of the item will be dropped at the next reset. This gives the player an incentive to keep upgrading their gear even if they're uncertain of the extent to which it will improve after a future reset.

Whether a boost upgrade is successful or not, the process could be costly and there is a significant risk that the item may become obsolete or even break if it fails. A unsuccessful upgrade could ruin Upgrade Crystals and Assist Powder, as well as the upgraded item. Cash shop items can be used to reduce or eliminate the possibility of failure. Some upgrades also give a bonus if reinserted.

Glyphs

Glyphs are available in the Black Lion Trading Post as part of a Gem Store bundle or purchase, with certain unlimited-use tools, and during Faction Crypt Raids. Each Faction Crypt can drop one of these Glyphs. There are also some rare glyphs which you can find in any of the Faction Crypts.

Once you have obtained the desired Glyphs you'll need them to be placed on your equipment. Each Glyph unlocks a unique bonus that can boost the stats of a particular set of nodes in the vicinity of the Glyph. Based on the Glyph the bonus will be +40 to one of your primary stats, or +25 to two of your secondary stats.

The use of Glyphs Glyph can boost all nodes that are linked to it, so you should try to place your Glyphs near the most important nodes of the Graph to maximize the impact. For example, a Druid should try to place their Glyphs near their primary damage nodes, but also think about placing them near crucial damage nodes as well.

Leveling

The item upgrading system allows players to increase the performance of specific items by putting upgraded components into them. This is known as "upping". Each upgradeable item has a level that determines its final upgraded stats. Upgraded items can be upgraded up to a maximum of 385. Each level of item requires various components, and upgrade costs increase with each level.

Certain upgrades require a specific ingredient to activate. This ingredient can be obtained by finishing Upgrade Recipes. These recipes can be purchased from NPCs or found on the upgrade tab in crafting tables. Each Upgrade Recipe that is completed will result in a certain amount of Technology points. These points can be used to level the item, and once enough points are earned, the upgrade will be claimed and any additional bonuses will be added to the item.

When the player upgrades an item it is replaced with a different item of the same kind. The same armor will be upgraded to an weapon or shield when upgraded. The new item comes with its own set bonus. This can be a downside, as the item can increase in price even if you do not require it.

If the player has enough tokens, they can reroll item upgrades. The item will be replaced with an entirely new item that is based on a level 1 base and totally different bonuses. This is a good idea however it should not be used frequently as it can be a waste of resources.

Some upgrades can be rerolled multiple times to increase their value, giving players the ability to alter their gear. Dolphin's Gift is a good example, since it grants buffs when the player repeatedly enters or leaves the water. It can be upgraded multiple times, each time increasing the maximum roll by 10 points. This item is highly important in PvP. A perfectly rolled version can be worth 50 times the value of its non-upgraded counterpart.

Requirements

The ability to upgrade items allows players to increase the level of their available equipment - weapons, armor, and trinkets over ilvl 385 by presenting the appropriate items and currency to an item upgrader NPC. The upgrade of armor set pieces will also increase the base defense of the piece, whereas upgrading weapon items will increase the base damage and the strength and dexterity required to meet the upgraded equipment's requirements.

Each item can be upgraded up to five times, with the exception of hero gear, which can be upgraded with eight upgrades. Every time you upgrade items an item, it is given an opportunity to fail. The failure rate increases the more you go beyond the maximum number of upgrades. Failures will result in the item reverting to its original condition, which requires the player to pay for more items than if they stopped upgrading after the maximum amount.

If an item isn't upgraded, the experience bar in its growth bar will reset to zero. Additionally the item will lose any bonuses it gained, including crit chance and attack damage, and all other effects that are associated with that effect (for instance, a higher healing over time or speed of reload). However, the player may continue to use the weapon or armor after the failure.

When an item is upgraded the upgrades are applied from the lowest to the highest. This means that when a weapon is upgraded, if it receives a crit chance boost it will be applied before any damage from attacks increases. A new attribute called Slots has been added to the item definition and the value is computed each time an upgrade is applied.

The amount of resources required to upgrade an item is dependent on its rarity score and upgrade items slot count. The cost of upgrading non-premium items is equal to the base value of the upgrade--for instance, a typical equipment item may have five upgrades, each costing 25600 Technology Points, 4x Quality Improvement Chance. Hero grade items are less expensive per upgrade.

Premium items might have different upgrade requirements from normal equipment. For instance they might require fewer sowels, but more minerals and orons.
