Participants were 46 CLKs at the upper-intermediate level who responded to MQs, DCTs, and RIs. They were also asked to think about their evaluations and refusal performance in RIs. The results showed that CLKs frequently chose to defy native Korean pragmatic norms. Their choices were influenced by four factors: their personalities and multilingual identities, their ongoing life histories, as well as their relationship affordances. Refusal Interviews (RIs)
The key problem in the field of pragmatic research is: Why do some learners refuse to accept native-speaker norms? Recent research attempted to answer this question with several experimental tools including DCTs MQs and RIs. Participants comprised 46 CLKs and 44 CNSs from five Korean Universities. The participants were asked to complete the DCTs and MQs in their L1 or L2. Then they were invited to a RI where they were asked consider their responses to the DCT situations.
The results showed that CLKs on average, did not follow the norms of native speakers in more than 40 percent of their responses. They did this despite the fact that they were able to produce patterns that closely resembled natives. They were also aware of their pragmatism resistance. They attributed their choices to learner-internal aspects such as their identities, personalities and identities that are multilingual, as well as ongoing life histories. They also referred to external factors, like relationship advantages. For example, they described how their relationships with professors led to an easier performance in regards to the linguistic and intercultural standards of their university.
However, the interviewees also expressed concerns about the social pressures and penalties they could be subject to if they violated their social norms. This will enable them to better understand how different cultural environments could affect the practical behavior of learners in the classroom and beyond.
