How to Replace an audi Keys Replacement cost G28 Engine Speed Sensor
Charles the Humble Technician shows how to replace audi key the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. The sensor is situated at the top of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a message to the ECU through an uncolored wire T55/49, then to the tachometer on the instrument cluster.
1. Engine Speed Sensor
Located on the edge of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear, the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends signals to ECU pin T55/49 using the grey wire. The ECU uses this information to regulate the amount of fuel and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer in instrument cluster.
The sensor serves as a reference for comparing with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu has to know when the crankshaft reached TDC and also the position of the camshaft, in order to activate the spark and injectors.
If this sensor fails the ECU will throw a P00160 code which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are out of sync and possibly indicating the chain is stretched or a jump link on the upper chain of timing. The code will not appear without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).
Testing is a bit challenging because there are two connector pins and they serve different purposes however the best method of testing it is by measuring resistance between the sensor and the ECU. When the sensor is fully operational, it should read around 1000 ohms. If you're experiencing issues with this part, check for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay.
2. Injectors
Yesterday, while accelerating from the highway paytoll at full speed, i noticed a huge decrease in power. It was like the engine had run out of gas. Or my injectors weren't firing. In the morning, i removed the spark plugs, 3 were drenched with gazoline the fourth was dry. When I start the engine without sparks i put tissue on the top of each of the injector holes, the 3 drenched with gazoline pop out, but the 4th stays shut. I tested the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I found zero ohm. I'm assuming the issue is in another place.
I also tried to reset PID but without success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged and is running fine when it is connected but it still has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for coolant (G62) shows the wrong temp value -49c, even if I unplug it. Also i noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit shows 2 bar when the actual pressure is 0.0 when I crank up the engine.
I don't know what to do. I feel like i've pretty much all other possibilities out. However, i'm afraid that I may have missed something. If anyone has any ideas please chime in! TIA!
3. Fuel Pump
The fuel pump in the g28 is activated by a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sender is the same as the G4 and they both work in the 80, 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a wrecking yard or from a parts store. Testing them is easy - put your DMM in resistance mode and measure the resistance between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's side up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black connector's side). They should be infinite Ohms.
4. ECU
The ECU of our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY ADU) engines needs to know both the position and speed the crankshaft to determine timing of fuel injectors, etc. In order to do this it uses a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If you have a problem with either of these, the diagnostic scanner will display the codes that could trigger an engine shutdown.
Some of the signs of a failed G28 sensor include an inaccurate gearbox rev counter and gears that shift faster than normal and/or misfiring when in gear. It is likely that your sensor is failing and needs to be replaced if you encounter any of these signs. The good news is they are very cheap and easily accessible, especially in the case of the Bosch unit which is what we have. If you prefer, GM's version of this component is an option.
5. Tachometer
A malfunctioning engine sensor can cause a number of problems within your vehicle. There should be a resistance of approximately 1000 ohms between these points.
