Study of Chinese Learners' Pedagogical Choices in Korean

Participants were 46 CLKs of upper-intermediate ability who provided responses to DCTs and MQs. They were also asked to reflect on their evaluation and refusal performance in RIs. Their decisions were influenced by four factors such as their personality and multilingual identities, their ongoing lives, as well as their relational affordances. The MQ data was analyzed in order to identify the participants' actual choices. The data were categorized according to Ishihara's (2010) definition of pragmatic resistance. Then, we compared the selections with their linguistic performance using DCTs in order to determine if they were indicative of pragmatic resistance. In addition, the interviewees were asked to justify their choices of behavior in a particular scenario.

The results of the MQs and DCTs were then analysed using descriptive statistics and z-tests. It was found that CLKs frequently used phrases like "sorry" and "thank you." The RIs revealed that CLKs knew about their pragmatic resistance to each DCT situation. The RIs were conducted one-toone within two days after the participants completed the MQs. The RIs were recorded and transcribed, then coded by two independent coders. Coding was an iterative process, in which the coders listened and discussed each transcript. The coding results are then contrasted with the original RI transcripts to determine whether they accurately portrayed the underlying behavior.

Interviews for refusal

A key question of pragmatic research is why some learners choose to resist native-speaker pragmatic norms. Recent research sought to answer this question using various experimental tools, including DCTs MQs and RIs. Participants included 44 CLKs and 46 CNSs from five Korean Universities. Participants were required to complete the DCTs and MQs either in their L1 or L2 levels. Then they were invited to attend a RI where they were required to consider their responses to the DCT situations.

The results showed that, on average, the CLKs disapproved of native-speaker pragmatic norms in more than 40% of their responses. They did this despite the fact that they could produce patterns that closely resembled native speakers. They were aware of their practical resistance. They attributed their resistance to learner-internal variables such as their personality and multilingual identities. They also referred to external factors, such as relational affordances. They also discussed, for instance how their relationships with their professors allowed them to perform better in terms of the linguistic and cultural expectations of their university.

The interviewees expressed their concern about the social pressures or penalties they could be subject to in the event that their local social norms were not followed.
