How to Replace an audi key replacement G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician teaches how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is situated at the edge of transmission, above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU through a grey wire T55/49, then to the tachometer on the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

It is located on the outside of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends an electrical signal to ECU pin T55/49 through an uncolored wire. The ECU then uses this information to control fuel, timig and boost. It also sends signals to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor serves as a reference for comparing with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must be aware when the crankshaft is TDC and the location of the camshaft so it can start spark and injectors according to the situation.

If this sensor fails when it fails, the ECU will display an error code P00160. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is out of line with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of a chain stretch or a jumpy chain link in the upper chain. However, the error code won't appear on its own, without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

It is a little tricky to test as there are various pins on the connector, and each one has different functions. The best method for doing this is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. When the sensor is operational, it should be reading approximately 1000 ohms. Look for signs of coolant, or Audi a3 keys oil in the connector bay if you are experiencing problems with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when i was accelerating to the fullest speed from highway paytoll, i experienced massive power loss as if the engine was running out of gas or injectors aren't firing at all. I took out the spark plugs this morning, three were soaked with gasoline and the 4th was dry. I put tissue over each hole in the injector and when i turn the engine on without sparks, the ones that have gazoline pop right out. The 4th one remains closed. I checked the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I got zero ohm. I assume that the problem is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is disconnected and is running fine when it is plugged in but it still has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even when unplugged, still shows an ice temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar but the actual pressure is zero.

I'm not sure what to do, i think i've pretty much completely ruled out all other possibilities. I'm concerned that i may have missed something. Please let me know if you have any ideas! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump of the g28 receives a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sensor is the same as the G4 and both are used in the 80 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a wrecking yard or in a local parts store. It is simple to test them - simply put your DMM into resistance mode and test the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector's end facing up). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU in our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY) engines must be aware of the speed and position of the crankshaft to make decisions regarding timing of the fuel injector, etc. To do this, it makes use of a Crank Position Sensor Replacement Audi key cost (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). 5. Tachometer
