The i3+ does not have obstacle avoidance capabilities like the i7+ or other top-rated robots that we test. It can be stuck on power cords and socks and have difficulty navigating between different surfaces like rug and hardwood.

iRobot recommends you clear out areas where the i3+ EVO will vacuum prior to when you use it, including clearing out any toys or clutter it may encounter. You should also keep the filters and dust bin free of dirt to prevent them from getting blocked. If the i3+ EVO's internal bin is full or its battery is low it goes back to its docking station and automatically emptying its debris into the station's external dustbin and then resumes cleaning the area where it started. Battery life is about an hour and a half of constant usage. It takes about three hours to fully charge.

2. Roomba from iRobot

The iRobot i7+ is a top model from iRobot’s flagship line and is packed with the latest features. It has self-charging and self-navigating. However, the most important feature is its auto-emptying bin. This will eliminate the need for regular maintenance.

The Roomba i7+ is able to remember up to 10 floor plans and their names with Imprint Smart Mapping, an application that allows it to identify rooms to clean them more efficiently. It also works with the iRobot Home app to let you schedule cleaning jobs and direct your robot by voice or via the app.

The i7+ is quicker and more maneuverable in our tests than the eufy RoboVac G30. It also cleaned large pet hair pieces from all surfaces including carpeting. The biggest benefit over the eufy, though the dust bin is self-emptying, which eliminates a major cause of maintenance and lowers the amount of time spent cleaning.

We were also awestruck by the i7+'s integration with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant AI services, which we used to instruct the robot to start, stop or pause its cleaning routines and move around the room, and even vacuum a specific space. Connecting the i7+ to these services was simple and easy with the iRobot Home app. When connected we were able to communicate with the i7+ using voice commands, such as "Hey Alexa, vacuum the master bedroom." The iRobot Home App also offers options for managing i7+ settings and monitoring the performance.

3. Dyson Cyclone V10

This tiny Dyson model is a sports car in a sea of cordless vacuums that feel like minivans and buses. It's powerful enough to replace a traditional stand-up vacuum in a majority of homes, but also small enough to fit on a bookcase or coffee table.

The V10 is powered by a 7-cell energy-dense lithium-ion battery which produces continuous, non-fading power for 60 minutes. The advanced whole-machine filtering system traps allergens, then releases fresh air into your home. The cleaning head is specially designed to drive bristles made of nylon that are stiff into carpet to collect large crumbs and fine dust. It comes with three suction modes to match the task at hand. It quickly converts from handheld vacuum to floor vacuum, and then back to floor.

The model comes with a dock that can charge the Dyson to 100 percent in 3.5 hours. It also provides an easy access to two attachments and an wand. This is a major improvement over older Dysons that require a lengthy charge and are difficult to store.

The main drawback of the V10 is its sluggish run time. As CR's tests show, its claims to run up to 60 minutes are misleading. This is an average, not an exceptional, run time for a battery-powered cordless vac. It's still enough time to vacuum the majority of a typical-sized home however, it's not enough to clean every area (though the second time around usually will suffice). This model has its own advantages however: it's lighter and more maneuverable than older Dysons cordless models and its ability to vacuum is noticeably superior on carpets with low pile.

4. iRobot Roomba 694

The 694 is a basic robotic vacuum that's a great option for those who don't have a lot of money to spend on a robot. It's capable of sucking up most kinds of debris in our tests, and often passes over the same areas many times to ensure a thorough clean. Its flat front makes it possible to reach corners and edges of walls.

Its navigation system is smart and uses iAdapt technology to stay clear of obstacles and guide you through your home. However, it lacks the ability to map that is found in more advanced models, including our Top rated robot Vacuum picks, i3+EVO and J7+ Series. Because of this, it may get stuck on things like phone cords and low furniture, and it frequently is power-depleted before returning to its base.

The Xiaomi Mi robot is superior in many ways to the Roomba 694, as it has fewer components that require regular cleaning, is equipped with an allergen-trapping HEPA filtering system, incurs lower recurring cost and has more advanced automation abilities and can better move itself. The app offers a wide range of options to customize your robotic cleaner. These include virtual barriers, mopping levels and behavior adjustments docking frequency settings, and much more. The app is easy to navigate and use similar to other Samsung devices.

In our tests during our tests, the Jet Bot AI+ performed well on hard floors. It cleaned up 86 percent of dog hair (on carpet). It did not do well in avoiding taller objects like cords or socks. This was disappointing. It's also more expensive than other models that we tested, and this could be a problem for some shoppers.

The app allows you to access the camera onboard of the smart vacuum cleaner vacuum. You can also create live streaming from the robot's cleaning area. The application also allows you to steer the robot manually should you need to. For example my living room rug has a darkly-colored border that can trip up some of the other robots I've tried. However the HRV 425BL kept moving across the border without registering it as an incline. The ability to program a daily cleaning schedule for each week is a time-saving advantage.
