What is Evolution?

The term "evolution" is derived from the Latin word"evolution" which means unrolling or revealing. However, the concept itself has a myriad of meanings over the years as it has taken shape in the sciences and other fields. Some early evolutionists, like Jean Baptiste de Lamarck and Erasmus Darwin (Charles's grandfather) believed that the existing species changed into other species in a certain way. The term transmutation was coined by the Lamarck's disciple, embryologist Etienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire to describe this notion. Charles Lyell, in his Principles of Geology, published in 1833, challenged the concept of evolution and borrowed the term from Geoffroy's student.

In recent years, evolutionary biologists have defined evolution as a process when living organisms develop traits that improve their chances of survival, or their ability to produce offspring. As time passes, genetic variation can lead a population to acquire new physical traits or biological functions. Such a shift in gene frequency is called natural selection, and is the primary driver behind evolutionary changes. However other changes that are not genetic, such as increases in muscle mass due to exercise or diet cannot be considered examples of evolution because they are not passed on to future generations.

Despite the fact that evolution has withstood the tests of time and thousands of scientific tests however, creationists have taken advantage of the idea that evolution is controversial to claim that it shouldn't be taught in school. It is essential for science educators to support the teaching of evolution. In certain countries, the opposition to evolution has been growing. In the United States some states have taken steps to limit teaching of evolution. They assert that evolution is not possible because it would require miracles. The founders of modern science shunned miracles in fear that they would lose their credibility.

Some creationists accept naturalistic evolution as well as special creation, and refer to their position "theistic evolution." This is also known as "continuous evolutionism" or the "evolution of the created species." In this belief system, God creates the original species and allows them to change over time. In the end these evolutionary changes will create new species that are like the original ones.

Some creationists believe that God created all living things and the universe in one event called the Great Flood. These creationists hold that all species were created at the same moment and then gradually evolved. They deny the notion of abiogenesis and assert that self-replicating life cannot arise from non-living matter.

In general, the creationists are against teaching evolution in schools. Numerous professional organizations, like the National Science Teachers Association and the Association for Science Teacher Education support this position, as do the American Anthropological Association and the Geological Society of America. However, some academic institutions and scientists are more flexible and permit the inclusion of both evolution and creationism in their curriculum.

What exactly is Creationism in Korea?

When people think of creationism typically think of the United States. South Korea also has an anti-evolution group. Publishers of high-school textbooks recently announced that they would remove the mention of evolution in their books. The Society for Textbook Revise, an independent organization that is an offshoot of the Korea Association for 에볼루션코리아 Creation Research (KACCR) has been the driving force behind this campaign. The STR has achieved its first victory by removing from textbooks examples of the evolution and ancestor of an avian, called the Archeopteryx. Its next target is to take out portions of Darwin's notorious finch-research and also on human evolution.

STR claims that it has the backing of 4,000 families and individual members. Its mission, it states is to clear the world of what it calls "atheist materialism" that paints a negative view for students. It also aims to counteract the influence of American creationists in the United States. A survey of students in biology found that half did not believe in evolution. The reasons aren't evident, but they could be due to religious beliefs or the lack of creation scientists in the United States.

The KACR has achieved many things in the past through seminars and lectures. It also publishes a bimonthly magazine called Creation and the book. One of these was a textbook on natural science with a creationist stance. It sparked interest in college communities. In 1991 an academic and minister started teaching Creation Science in one university, and it continues to be taught to this day.

On August 7 and 8 in 1993, the same day that the World Expo opened in Daejeon, KACR held a second International Symposium on Creation Research. Six lecturers from around the world including ICR's John Morris, Duane Gish, and Steven Austin spoke to audiences of over a thousand. KACR members and KACR have also given talks on creation science in prestigious seminaries. KACR intends to establish a Creation Science Education Center.
