How to Replace an audi keys replacement G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician shows how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is located at the top of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal the ECU via a grey wire (T55/49), then to the tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

It is located on the outside of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends signals to ECU pin T55/49 using the grey wire. The ECU uses this information to control fuel and boost. It also sends a signal to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference point to connect with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft reached TDC and also the position of the camshaft, so that it can activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails the ECU will display the P00160 error, which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft aren't in sync and possibly indicating the chain stretching or replacement audi key cost a jump link on the upper timing chain. However, the error code won't appear on its own, without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

Testing is a bit tricky because there are two pins for the connector and they serve different purposes but the most effective method to test it is by measuring resistance between the sensor and the ECU. If the sensor is operational, it should be reading approximately 1000 ohms. Examine for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you have problems with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when i was accelerating to the fullest speed from highway paytoll, I experienced an abrupt drop in power like the engine is running out of gas or injectors aren't firing any more. Today, i pulled out the spark plugs, three were drenched in gazoline, the 4th one was dry. I placed a tissue over each hole in the injector and when I turn the engine on without sparks, the 3 that have gazoline pop right out. The 4th one remains shut. I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55/30/55/48/55/14/55/48/ i get zero ohm. I'm assuming the issue is in another place.

I also tried to reset PID without success. The car will start if the G28 is disconnected and it runs perfectly when it is connected but it still has intermittent misfire issues at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for the coolant (G62) shows the wrong temperature value of -49c, even if I unplug it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars when the actual pressure is zero.

I'm not sure what to do. I think I've eliminated everything else. But i'm worried that I might have missed something. If anyone has any suggestions, please share them! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump of the g28 receives signals from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter functions similarly to the G4 sender, and both operate on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily find a spare in a wrecking shop or parts store. It is easy to test them - just put your DMM into resistance mode and test the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump on the connector's edge facing upwards). They should be infinite ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU of our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY) engines needs to be aware of the position and speed of the crankshaft to make decisions regarding timing of the fuel injector, etc. It utilizes a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to achieve this. If either of these go badly, you will see codes on the diagnostic scanner which could cause engine shut down.

A damaged G28 sensor could cause an inaccurate gearbox speed counter, a gearbox that shifts faster than normal, and/or a misfire while in gear. If you experience any of these problems, it is likely your sensor is failing and requires replacement key for audi a4. The good thing is that they are very cheap and readily available, especially if you're looking at an Bosch model, like ours. If you prefer, GM's version of this part is a good option.

5. Tachometer

A failing engine speed sensor could be a cause for a slew of problems in your car. It's a vital component of the audi car key case's transmission as it sends information to the ECU about how the car's crankshaft is spinning. This sensor could cause the transmission to malfunction and other components in the car to be affected.

The G5 engine sensor is located at the outskirts of the transmission, just above the flywheel ring. It sends an electrical signal through an uncolored wire to the ECU pin T55/49. The ECU then processes this signal to regulate the flow of fuel, timig and boost, and also sends it on to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster. You can test for sensor failure by examining the continuity of the sensor to the tachometer. Additionally, you can examine the continuity between pins T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79]), and between pin T6a/1 as well as pin T26a/12. You should see around 1000 ohms of resistance between these two points. This part is common across the audi key shell 80-100-200-RS2 range, beginning with the 1985 MC and up to the 1997 UrS AN and the 1995 RS2 DU So, you may find some good ones in wrecking yards.
